May 16 1987... and so much more
Only one man in the history of sport has secured an FA Cup winner's medal at football and dismissed the great Alvin Kallicharran at cricket.
That unique double is a part of the unique sporting life of Steve Ogrizovic. And in the unlikely event of anyone sticking their hand up and asserting, "Hold on, I too have secured an FA Cup winner's medal at football and dismissed the great Alvin Kallicharran at cricket," Steve could up the ante with, "yes but have you also been part of a European Cup final-winning squad in football and been the key to the crucial wicket of Geoffrey Boycott in one of cricket's most memorable giant-killings?"
Not that Oggy would ever seek to drop that in. The Sky Blues legend is as modest and assuming as can be, despite his mighty career - a career in which, as he explains to Reports from Arbroath, was built in football but underpinned by his first sporting love... cricket.
It could have turned out the other round. Mansfield Town told a teenage Oggy that he was too big to be a goalkeeper just as he was emerging as a fast bowler with Nottinghamshire Colts. Football won out in the end though, as more than 600 games for the Sky Blues testify (whoever it was at Mansfield - bad decision!) - but his passion for cricket and friendships with many in the game, most of all from his years with Cov & NW at Binley Road, remain.
The worlds of football and cricket have given Steve Ogrizovic much joy - and it's totally reciprocal. His exploits on sports fields have supplied some glory and loads of pleasure. Oggy's autobiography, if he ever considers writing it, could be called "May 16 1987... and so much more."
